Grasping for Joy in the Daily Grind
I commuted to Chicago from the suburbs daily by train for six years. The commute was a grind.
One evening, after a long day of work, I shuffled down to my train platform, carefully avoiding a guy handing out free samples of bread.
Behind me, someone yelled, “Hey!” I snapped my head around and saw Bread Man pointing at me. He wound his arm and hurled a loaf of white bread in my direction in a perfect spiral.
Instinct took over. Tracking the bread with my eyes, I jumped into the air and grabbed the loaf like a game-winning interception in the Super Bowl. Everyone around me cheered, and Bread Man danced. I was a hero.
Moments of joy surround you each day. Become a happier person by inviting them into your life.
But don’t eat the bread. It was terrible.
